Appalachian Summer Camp

Week 2/June 21-26

Venture and Explorer Campers

Holston Presbytery Camp is located within the B-E-A-UTIFUL North Carolina High Country in the Appalachian Mountains. This area has an extremely unique history we often don’t get to celebrate. In addition to all the fun Holston activities you know and love – worship, hikes, team-building, crafts, zips, climbs, crafts, and more – we will spend time this week learning about our local Appalachian area and history. Campers will enjoy Appalachian themed crafts, songs, and more!

During this week at camp, all campers will attend an off-site field trip to the Hickory Ridge Living History Museum. This is a hands-on museum which focuses on the inter-relatedness of the early settlers with nature and their practices of self-sufficiency. We will step back in time and learn what it was like to live in this area during the 18th century with interpreters who dress in period clothing. Venture (grades 3-5) campers will also enjoy hearing classic Appalachian stories told by a professional storyteller. Did you know Jonesborough, TN, located on the other side of the mountains, is the storytelling capital of the world? We will invite a storyteller to share classic Appalachian adventures over a campfire.

Explorer (grades 6-8) campers will enjoy a special off-site field trip to watch Horn in the West, America’s longest-running Revolutionary War outdoor drama. The play tells the story of a family in a rural mountain community as they navigate pioneer life and the struggle for fairness, freedom, and loyalty during the war. To learn more, click here.

All campers will stay at Main Camp in comfortable cabins with shared bathroom facilities. Guys and girls live in separate cabin groups according to their age-group. Each cabin sleeps 16 in cozy bunks. Campers are supervised by at least 2 adult counselors. Most meals are served in the dining hall. All campers will have one camp-out night experience on Holston property and get a taste of rustic camping.
